Motorola Announce the Droid RAZR

Motorola Announce the Droid RAZR

Motorola, along with the US network Verizon, has announced what they’re calling the best smartphone on the planet – the Droid RAZR. The phone has been rumoured for a while, appearing under several names including the Spyder, but the actual features and specs have been kept under wraps until today.

As the device revives the classic RAZR name, it’s no surprise to find out the phone is very, very slim. In fact, it’s measures just 7.1mm at its thickest point, although like theSamsung Galaxy S II, it’s thicker at either end than the middle of the chassis. It’s light too, weighing 127 grams, and has been made using splash-proof Kevlar-fibre and has Gorilla Glass over the 4.3-inch Super AMOLED screen.

Inside the RAZR beats the heart of a 1.2GHz dual-core processor with 1GB RAM, and in the US it’ll connect to Verizon’s 4G LTE network. On the rear of the handset sits an 8 megapixel camera while around the front, you’ll find a video-call lens. The main camera will also record 1080p video.

Motorola has introduced a variety of apps and accessories compatible with the RAZR. A new version of their ATRIX laptop dock will be available, for web browsing through Firefox, basic computing or watching videos. The MotoCast app connects to your home PC and will stream music, pictures and documents between the computer and your phone, and a Smart Actions app makes tweaking everyday settings quicker and easier.

It’ll also communicate with their new MotoACTV music player and sports system, which can operate as a Bluetooth watch for monitoring your sporting stats, and controlling some aspects of the phone such as incoming calls.

What Motorola didn’t announce was the operating system. Fine, we know it’s an Android device, but as to which version, it’s anyone’s guess. Their official page is very careful not to reveal too many technical details – the screen resolution for example – and doesn’t state what the RAZR will run. We’re guessing it’s Gingerbread, purely because they would have mentioned the presence of something more exciting!

The RAZR will be available throughout the world from November, just without the 4G capability and the Droid tag over here.
